What's the Challenge?
It’s a low-stakes, high-fun filmmaking competition designed to get you creating. Whether you fly solo or build a team of friends, family, or fellow creatives, the aim is simple: create a short film that’s 1–9 minutes long.
The best films will be screened at the Misty Flicks Film Festival in front of a live audience — a rare opportunity for filmmakers of all levels!
Who Can Enter?
Anyone who lives in Aotearoa, New Zealand.
New to film? Try it out with friends or family – it’s a great entry point.
Experienced? Use the challenge to try a genre you’ve never dared attempt.
Working on a big script? Turn a scene or moment into a stand-alone short.
Think of this as your filmmaking sandbox with extra sprinkles, thanks to Hoops and Scoops, who are here to support emerging storytellers and local creativity.

Requirements & FAQs
Why does my film need to be G or PG-rated?
Anyone can come along to the Misty Flicks Film Festival, including children and rangatahi, so it's important that entries are classified G or PG.
Why include a prop and a character name?
It shows us that the film was made for the Challenge. This year’s required elements will be sent to you once you've registered.
Who can enter?
Anyone based in Aotearoa, New Zealand. You must also shoot your film in NZ and meet all entry criteria.
How do we enter?
Register using the online entry form above.. You’ll receive an email with the Challenge information and payment details. Once you’ve paid, we’ll send you the splash screen and filmmaker pack.
How do we submit our completed film?
You’ll submit your film via FilmFreeway, we'll send you the link to it once you're signed up.
What does it cost to enter?
The entry fee is $100, and you can submit ONE film to the Misty Flicks Challenge 2026. This fee is non-refundable.
Can I use professional actors?
Absolutely! Use sock puppets, seasoned actors, or your gran—your film, your way (except where we've set the rules!). Creativity and resourcefulness are encouraged.
What format should my film be?
Submit in high-definition. We’ll convert it to DCP for screening.
Do I need a poster?
Nope! But if you do make one, send it to us and we’ll use it on our socials.
Can I submit my film to other festivals?
Yes, but after its first screening at Misty Flicks (cast and crew screenings don’t count).
Do I need to attend the festival if I’m a finalist?
We’d love to see you there, but it’s not mandatory. Just make sure someone’s available to accept on your behalf if needed.
