Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned creative wanting to try something new, the Misty Flicks Challenge is your chance to bring your ideas to life — and maybe even see them play in front of a live audience at the Misty Flicks Film Festival.

What's the Challenge?
It’s a low-stakes, high-fun filmmaking competition designed to get you creating. Whether you fly solo or build a team of friends, family, or fellow creatives, the aim is simple: create a short film that’s 1–9 minutes long.
The best films will be screened at the Misty Flicks Film Festival in front of a live audience — a rare opportunity for filmmakers of all levels!
Who can enter?
Anyone who lives in Aotearoa, New Zealand.
New to film? Try it out with friends or family – it’s a great entry point.
Experienced? Use the challenge to try a genre you’ve never dared attempt.
Working on a big script? Turn a scene or moment into a stand-alone short.
Think of this as your filmmaking sandbox with extra sprinkles, thanks to Hoops and Scoops, who are here to support emerging storytellers and local creativity.

Entry Criteria & Rules
Eligibility
Entrants must be based in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Films must be shot in New Zealand.
All entry criteria must be met.
Film Duration
Films must be between 1 and 9 minutes in length, including opening titles and end credits.
Film Rating
Entries must be classified G or PG.
Misty Flicks is a family-friendly festival and films may be viewed by children and rangatahi.
Required Challenge Elements
Each film must include the required prop and character name.
These elements will be provided after registration and help verify that the film was created specifically for the Challenge.
Entry Fee
The entry fee is $100.
This fee is non-refundable.
One film may be submitted per entry.
Film Format
Films must be submitted in high-definition format.
Misty Flicks will convert selected films to DCP for screening.
AI Usage
AI-generated content may be used.
Filmmakers must hold the copyright or appropriate rights for all AI-generated content used in their film.
Filmmakers are legally responsible for any AI-generated content included in their submission.
A written disclosure as part of the submission process, and it must outline:

The tools used
The extent of its use
Festival Screening
Films may be submitted to other festivals after their first public screening at the Misty Flicks Film Festival.
Cast and crew screenings do not count as a public screening.
How do I enter?
Register using the online entry form. You'll receive an email with the Challenge information and payment details. Once payment has been received, we'll send you the splash screen and filmmaker pack.
How do I submit my completed film?
Films are submitted through FilmFreeway. We'll send you the submission link once you've registered.
Can I use professional actors?
Absolutely. Whether you're working with professional actors, first-timers, friends, family, or sock puppets, creativity and resourcefulness are encouraged.
Do I need a poster?
No. However, if you create one, we'd love to see it and may share it on our social media channels.
Do I need to attend the festival if I'm a finalist?
No, attendance is not mandatory. However, we encourage finalists to attend if possible. If you're unable to be there, please ensure someone can accept an award on your behalf if required.
Why does my film need to be G or PG-rated?
Misty Flicks is a family-friendly festival and welcomes audiences of all ages, including children and rangatahi. Keeping films G or PG-rated helps ensure everyone can enjoy the festival.
